The Garland County Library will host The Air Cavalry in Vietnam, a special presentation by Hot Springs native Lt. Col. (Ret.) Hugh L. Mills, Jr., on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.
One of the most highly decorated helicopter pilots of the Vietnam War, Mills will reflect on his experiences during three tours of duty in Vietnam flying Air Cavalry scout helicopters and gunships. During his service, Mills was shot down sixteen times and wounded three times while serving in combat operations.
Over the course of his military career, Mills earned numerous decorations for valor and distinguished service, including three Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three Bronze Stars, one awarded for valor in ground combat.
“Our program partnership with the Garland County Historical Society has provided a storytelling platform for many years where you can hear all about the people and events who have helped make our local history so fascinating,” said Adult Services Specialist Paul Kagebein. “And what better way to recognize the meaning of the Memorial Day weekend than by hearing one of those great local history stories, directly from a highly decorated Hot Springs native and veteran?”
This hybrid program will be presented in person at the Garland County Library Auditorium, located at 1427 Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs, and will also be livestreamed on the library’s official YouTube channel at Garland County Library YouTube Channel.
The program is free and open to the public. For more information about library programs and events, visit the Garland County Library or call 501-623-4161.
