Introducing GCL Forward, Garland County Library’s long-range initiative to expand access, improve services, and create modern library spaces for communities across the county.

Visit the Garvan Gardens Book Trail this September during Power of the Card!

This September, Garland County Library is partnering with Garvan Woodland Gardens to bring the community the Garvan Gardens Book Trail.

Visitors can follow a storybook trail winding toward the Garvan Children's Garden, where the pages of Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak are displayed one by one along the way. The picture book follows the seasonal shift from late summer into fall, and reading it outdoors, surrounded by the very garden scenery it describes, turns a simple stroll into an interactive storytime for children and families alike.

The Book Trail pairs early literacy with time outdoors. As part of the Power of the Card initiative — timed to coincide with Library Card Sign-Up Month — Garvan Woodland Gardens is offering free admission to anyone who shows a Garland County Library card. Children age 3 and under are always admitted free.

"It's a great chance to get outside, enjoy the changing season, and share a story with your kids at the same time," said Brook Olson, Children's Librarian and organizer of the Book Trail. "It's designed to be self-guided and family-paced — walkers can move through the story as slowly or quickly as they like."

The month bookends with two special celebrations at the gardens. The Book Trail Opening Celebration kicks things off on Saturday, September 5, at 10 a.m., with crafts and storytime along the trail. The month wraps up with the Book Trail Closing Celebration on Saturday, September 26, at 10 a.m., featuring more crafts and storytime followed by the Children's Solstice Parade and kids are invited to come dressed as their favorite woodland creature.

Families who don't yet have a library card can sign up before their visit to take advantage of the free admission offer. The Book Trail is part of Garland County Library's ongoing effort to bring literacy programming beyond its walls and into the community's favorite outdoor spaces.
