Park Chats to Spotlight the Photographer Behind America’s National Park Story

Garland County residents are invited to a free Park Chat on Wednesday, August 26, at 12 p.m., exploring the life and legacy of George Grant, the National Park Service's first chief photographer.

Over a twenty-five-year career, Grant captured more than 30,000 images of people, landscapes, and cultural resources in national parks across the country. His photographs helped shape how generations of Americans have pictured the parks, inspiring countless visitors to see these natural wonders for themselves. Despite that influence, Grant's name rarely appears alongside the images he created.

This Park Chat will look at Grant's career with the Park Service, including his two visits to Hot Springs National Park, and the lasting mark his photography left on how the public sees — and values — America's public lands.

This program is part of the collaborative series between Garland County Library and Hot Springs National Park, and can be attended in-person or watched via livestream on the Library’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/GarlandCoLibrary or the Garland County Library Facebook page.
